Carrier Oils for Herbal Remedies: Which Base Oil to Use & Why
Share
Every essential oil blend, roll-on remedy, and topical herbal preparation starts with a carrier oil. Carrier oils dilute potent botanicals, deliver them safely to skin, and add their own nourishing properties to your formula.
Choosing the right carrier is one of the most important decisions in home herbalism. This guide breaks down the carriers we carry at VialPure and when to use each one.
What Is a Carrier Oil?
A carrier oil (or base oil) is a vegetable, nut, or seed oil used to dilute essential oils, isolates, and herbal extracts for topical application. Without a carrier, undiluted essential oils can cause irritation, sensitization, or burns.
Carriers also affect how a blend feels on skin, how quickly it absorbs, and how long it lasts on the shelf.
Carrier Oils at a Glance
Jojoba Oil (Golden, Organic)
The universal carrier. Jojoba Oil is technically a liquid wax ester — not a true oil — which gives it an exceptionally long shelf life (2+ years) and a non-greasy feel.
Best for: Roll-ons, facial serums, hair oils, any beginner blend
Skin type: All skin types, including oily and acne-prone
Why makers love it: Mimics human sebum; rarely causes reactions
Sweet Almond Oil
A classic, affordable base for massage oils and body blends. Sweet Almond Oil absorbs moderately and has a mild, slightly nutty scent.
Best for: Body oils, massage blends, beginner lotion formulas
Skin type: Normal to dry; avoid if you have tree nut allergies
Rosehip Seed Oil (Organic)
A premium carrier prized for skin repair and anti-aging formulations. Rosehip Seed Oil is rich in vitamins A and C and absorbs quickly.
Best for: Facial serums, scar blends, after-sun care
Skin type: All skin types; especially mature or sun-damaged skin
Argan Oil (Organic)
Moroccan argan is a lightweight, luxurious carrier with high vitamin E content. Argan Oil is ideal for hair treatments and high-end facial products.
Best for: Hair serums, face oils, cuticle treatments
Skin type: Dry, mature, or combination skin
Specialty Carriers for Targeted Remedies
Tamanu Oil
Tamanu Oil has a distinctive earthy scent and is traditionally used for skin repair balms and wound-support formulas.
Best for: Balm bases, targeted skin repair roll-ons
Sea Buckthorn Oil
Vibrant orange Sea Buckthorn Oil is rich in carotenoids and adds antioxidant power to facial blends. Use at 5–10% in a jojoba base — it is potent and will stain at full strength.
Best for: Anti-aging serums, lip balms (small amounts)
Castor Oil
Thick and viscous, Castor Oil is the classic base for hair growth treatments and heavy-duty balm formulations.
Best for: Hair oils, lash/brow serums, thick salves

How to Dilute Essential Oils in Carrier Oil
Standard dilution guidelines for topical remedies:
- 2% dilution (12 drops EO per 1 oz carrier) — daily body products, general use
- 3% dilution (18 drops EO per 1 oz carrier) — short-term therapeutic use
- 1% dilution (6 drops EO per 1 oz carrier) — facial products, sensitive skin, children
Always use Disposable Pipettes for precise filling and a Digital Precision Scale when working with isolates or solid butters.
Solid Carriers: Butters for Balms & Salves
For thicker remedies — lip balms, chest rubs, healing salves — combine liquid carriers with solid butters:
- Shea Butter (Unrefined, Raw) — creamy, versatile, beloved by soap and balm makers
- Cocoa Butter (Raw, Unrefined) — firm, chocolate-scented, adds structure to balms
Basic balm ratio: 2 parts shea butter + 1 part jojoba oil + essential oils at 2–3% of total weight.
The Lotion Maker Kit bundles jojoba, rosehip, shea, sweet almond, lavender, and pipettes.
Storage & Shelf Life Tips
- Store carriers in amber glass or dark HDPE in a cool, dark place
- Most unrefined carriers last 6–12 months; jojoba lasts 2+ years
- Refrigerate rosehip and sea buckthorn if you won't use them within 6 months
- Label every bottle with oil name and date opened
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use coconut oil as a carrier?
We don't currently carry coconut oil, but it works well for balms. Note that fractionated coconut stays liquid; virgin coconut solidifies below 76°F.
Which carrier is best for sensitive skin?
Jojoba — its wax-esters structure is closest to skin's natural oils and rarely causes reactions.
Do I need different carriers for different essential oils?
No — any carrier will dilute any essential oil. Choose based on skin feel, shelf life, and the remedy's purpose.
What's the difference between refined and unrefined?
Unrefined oils retain more nutrients and natural scent but have shorter shelf lives. We prioritize unrefined and organic where available.
